School Transport

Summary

Late applications remain possible through Bus Éireann’s Family Portal, but transport depends on available capacity; no specific exception for bereavement was outlined.

592. Deputy Robert Troy asked the Minister for Education and Youth if a late application can be accepted from a family in circumstances where one parent is recently deceased and the remaining parent now requires school transport; if so the process which must be followed; and how late an application can be submitted. Michael Moynihan Minister of State at the Department of Education and Youth Fianna Fáil

The School Transport Scheme is a significant operation managed by Bus Éireann on behalf of the Department of Education and Youth.

Parents are required to register their details on the Bus Éireann Family Portal to have their child's eligibility for transport assessed and to make applications under the scheme: www.buseireann.ie/schooltransport/.

The closing date for applications and payments for the 2026/27 school year was 08 May 2026. Applications can still be made on the portal at this time but are considered late. Where the application process is completed late, Bus Éireann may accommodate the pupil on a service if capacity is available on a service.
