Summary

The Minister referred concerns about difficult 2026 Leaving Certificate higher-level mathematics papers to the State Examinations Commission, which oversees examinations.

595. Deputy Seán Kyne asked the Minister for Education and Youth whether her Department has carried out a review into the mathematics higher level papers 1 and 2 in this year's Leaving Certificate, which was poorly received by students, parents and teachers (details supplied); whether the drop in grades in mathematics in 2026 could be partly answered by the difficulties in the papers; the changes she envisages in preparation for Leaving Certificate 2027; and whether similar changes and difficulties could appear without warning in other subjects. Hildegarde Naughton Minister for Education and Youth Fine Gael

The State Examinations Commission (SEC) has responsibility for the delivery of the State examinations, including the preparation of all examination papers and test instruments.

In view of this, I have asked the SEC to respond directly to the Deputy.
