Charlie McConalogue Minister of State at the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport Fianna Fáil

I propose to take Questions Nos. 657, 658, 659 and 660 together.

My officials and I continue to engage with the relevant stakeholders in order to examine the feasibility, potential costs and benefits, and operational requirements associated with the possible hosting of a major international golf championship in Ireland. Engagement has also taken place with the relevant local authority on transport, infrastructure, logistical and environmental matters.

I remain supportive of the proposal to host these championships as it aligns well with the key priorities underpinning the Major International Sports Events Policy and Strategy Framework. However, discussions remain ongoing and a range of matters, including the full hosting parameters and the respective responsibilities of the parties, would need to be satisfactorily resolved before any final decision could be considered.

Fáilte Ireland is undertaking an Economic Impact Assessment, informed by cost estimates provided by relevant stakeholders. As with any proposal of this scale, that assessment cannot be finalised until the project parameters have been sufficiently developed and agreed. However, it is worth noting that studies relating to previous editions of these championships have identified positive economic benefits for host regions.

Should the proposal proceed, the hosting of these championships outside the United Kingdom for the first time could have wider sporting and tourism significance. It may also offer an opportunity to support sporting links on a North–South and East–West basis.

While it would not be appropriate at this stage to provide an exact timetable for the conclusion of the discussions, it is my intention to bring an updated proposal to Government at the earliest practicable opportunity, once an agreement has been reached to the satisfaction of all parties.

In relation to attracting Major International Sports Events to Ireland, my Department published the Major International Sports Events Policy and Strategy Framework in 2024 which provides a framework for how Government should support major international sporting events, the benefits it should seek to derive from such events and the kind of events it would prioritise. This framework and its further development will guide future bid activity and ensure Ireland remains competitive and strategic in pursuing these opportunities. Upcoming major international sports events to be held in Ireland include the Ryder Cup in 2027, the UEFA EURO 2028 football tournament and the T20 Cricket World Cup in 2030.
