School transport places
Deputy Dempsey highlights parental stress over school-bus places and urges faster implementation of the review, including use of Local Link; the Taoiseach acknowledges the challenges while noting expanded transport provision.
I have had many parents contact me over the past few weeks about school bus places and the stress that is causing them. We have had the school bus transport review. The recommendations in it include changing the rules about the nearest school, the distance and all of the things we need to do. We have given ourselves until 2030 to do it but I do not believe we will at the rate we are proceeding at the moment. We need to the use the resources that are in front of us locally. That includes the Local Link. For example, in Athboy, we have a tradition there of pupils attending a school in Navan, which obviously is not their nearest school. A small tweak to that bus timetable for the Local Link would make that possible for those students. I ask the Taoiseach to engage with the Minister on that if he can.
Comment on this
At this time of the year, the school transport issue causes a significant degree of stress and so on. Notwithstanding that, we are transporting far more children now. There are about 180,000 students being transported. It was a key part of the original free school initiative of Donogh O'Malley. Transport was key to it in rural Ireland, in particular. There is continuing expansion and additional resources. However, there are significant challenges in terms of students attending schools that are not the nearest school and so on. I take the Deputy's point on the Local Link. We need to look at how we can integrate existing services into the school transport service. I will talk to the Minister about that.
