Whether it is fixed cameras, average speed cameras or GoSafe vans, the use of technology is a vital component of reducing speeding on our roads.

Road safety cameras are intended to be, first and foremost, a tool to support safety, prevention and behavioural change across the road network.

The aim of an enhanced use of cameras across Ireland is to encourage safer driving practices, reduce collisions and protect road users by promoting compliance with speed limits.

Nine static speed safety cameras are in operation across the country. The locations of these cameras were selected based on fatal and serious injury collision data and speed data, as well as feedback from stakeholders.

Fixed Charged Penalty Notices provide a system to avoid court proceedings for specific motoring offences by allowing offenders to pay a set fine and accept penalty points. If an individual does not pay a fixed charge amount on receipt of a Fixed Charge Notice within 56 days, he or she will be summonsed to appear in court.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that the Fixed Charge Processing Office does not possess a system which captures data in the detail requested.

However Garda authorities have advised that since the introduction of the static speed camera on the N25 at Ballinamona, Glenmore, South Kilkenny, there have been 45,862 non-intercept speed FCNs at this location and 2,358 of these were subsequently terminated.

Since the introduction of the static camera on the N80 at Graiguenaspiddoge, Carlow in May 2025, there have been 28,680 non-intercept speed FCNs at this location and 964 of these were subsequently terminated.

Figures are based on incidents which occurred from 01/05/2025 to 31/08/2026, inclusive. All information contained in this report is based upon operational data from the FCPS system as was available on 10/09/2026 and is liable to change.
