The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána under Section 33 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, which includes the allocation, deployment and transfer of Garda personnel throughout the State. The Commissioner is independent in his functions under Section 34 of the Act.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the attached table provides the number of Gardaí transferred out of the Galway division from 2022 to 2025, the stations these Gardaí were removed from as part of these transfers, and the division they were transferred to.

I am advised that the transfer of Garda members is considered on an ongoing basis in the context of the policing needs of the Garda organisation and of Garda Divisions nationwide. The significant number of new Gardaí now regularly attesting from the Garda College and the allocation of probationer Garda intakes has facilitated the approval of a significant number of existing member's transfers.

The situation regarding individual transfer applications is kept under ongoing review. With this in mind each transfer application is considered on its own merit and is fully considered within the overall context of the needs of the applicant’s own Division in conjunction with the needs of the Divisions applied for.
