826. Deputy Shónagh Ní Raghallaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration whether the education bond scheme, which may be used by certain students as an alternative to bank statements for demonstrating financial means, permits the bond to be paid by a third party on behalf of a student visa applicant; and whether there are restrictions regarding the residence or nationality of such third-party funders. I propose to take Questions Nos. 825 and 826 together.
The Education Bond referred to by the Deputy is a pilot programme and is kept under review. It is one of a number of options available to certain students to demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their stay in the State.
I am advised that the Education Bond Scheme may be used where funds are being provided by a sponsor, such as a parent or guardian. As part of the visa application process, applicants are required to provide evidence of the relationship between themselves and the person providing the financial support.
The Education Bond Scheme is open to applicants of all nationalities who are eligible to avail of the scheme and who meet the applicable requirements.
Information on the operation of the scheme and student financial requirements is available on the Immigration Service website at the following link:
