It is a priority for the Department to have recommendations made on all international protection applications as soon as possible.
This gives status to those who are entitled to international protection to rebuild their lives here, while also ensuring faster decision making in respect of those who do not meet the criteria.
The State is providing accommodation to nearly 32,000 people who have applied for international protection, and over 9,000 of these are children. Accommodation is provided in nearly 300 centres nationwide.
IPAS does not collate information on residents by stage of the application process.
Currently, there are over 900 people subject to deportation orders residing in IPAS accommodation. This number fluctuates regularly as people leave Ireland under the relevant return pathways, and as new orders are made.
The new International Protection Act 2026 gives effect to the measures of the EU Migration and Asylum Pact and has passed into law. The new rules came into effect on 12 June. This reform and its shorter processing timelines for applications should serve over time to reduce the scale of the demand for international protection accommodation.
