Child Detention Centres

Summary

Most transfers from Oberstown to adult prisons occurred after young people turned 18 to complete sentences, while others stayed until 18½ for education.

1024. Deputy Peadar Tóibín asked the Minister for Children, Disability and Equality the number of young persons transferred from Oberstown Children Detention Campus to the adult prison system in each of the past ten years; and the reasons for each transfer. [64632/26]

The majority of young people were transferred to the Irish Prison Service (IPS) to complete the remainder of their Detention sentence after they had reached their 18th birthday. Each transfer from Oberstown was planned in advance with the IPS on a case-by-case basis.

The remainder of the cases involved the young person remaining in Oberstown until they reach 18 years and 6 months of age. This enables those young people to complete an educational programme. This is in keeping with the legislation and is a decision for the Director of Oberstown on a case by case basis.
