Sligo orthopaedic theatre replacement
Eamon Scanlon seeks swift approval for replacement orthopaedic theatres at Sligo University Hospital after repeated cancellations and sterility problems. The Minister will raise the project with the Health Minister but gives no commitment.
Sligo University Hospital will shortly submit its options appraisal for formal capital approval for the replacements of its orthopaedic theatres. This project will provide two new replacement orthopaedic theatres, essential storage facilities and additional beds. I appeal to the Minister for Health and the Department to move swiftly in approving this critical development. The existing orthopaedic theatres are no longer fit for purpose.
Over the past 18 months, numerous operations have been cancelled due to leaks from roofs, radiators and humidifiers, resulting in breaches of theatre sterility. Six orthopaedic surgeons have been unable to perform scheduled procedures while patients face unacceptable delays and prolonged suffering. I urge the Minister and the Department to please prioritise this capital project as a matter of urgency.
Comment on this
I acknowledge the work that has been done to get to this point in trying to make progress on this capital investment. I will raise this directly with the Minister and highlight the Deputy's representations on behalf of the local community and those working in the hospital in ensuring that these type of services can be provided. Again, while I cannot give the Deputy a commitment today, I will raise it directly with the Minister.
