Health Services Staff

Summary

Barry Heneghan urged urgent regulation of certified athletic therapists to support physiotherapy services and reduce waiting lists; the Minister referred the matter to the HSE.

149. Deputy Barry Heneghan asked the Minister for Health further to Parliamentary Question No. 866 of 6 May 2026, and the HSE response, if she is aware that certified athletic therapists are qualified to manage patients under the criteria outlined by the HSE, but are prevented from assisting due to a lack of regulation; if she will urgently progress regulation of the profession, given that 300 ARTI certified athletic therapists currently practice in Ireland and approximately 150 honours degree students graduate from four Irish universities each year, so they can support physiotherapy services and help reduce waiting lists. As this is a service matter, I have asked the Health Service Executive to respond to the Deputy directly, as soon as possible.
