In accordance with Section 13 of the Roads Act 1993, as amended, the improvement and maintenance of regional and local roads is the statutory responsibility of each local authority. Work on such roads is funded from Councils' own resources, supplemented by State road grants.
As part of the Speed Limit Review implementation process, local authorities were invited to make applications for funding with regard to the installation, replacement, and updating of speed limit signage. Between 2024 and 2025, in line with the implementation of the first phase of the Speed Limit Review, approximately €10 million was allocated to local authorities.
In relation to the sufficiency of resources available to local authorities, this is a matter solely for each local authority to implement in consultation with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
