Antisocial behaviour in Dublin South-Central

Summary

Deputy Devine reports shootings, petrol bombings and intimidation around Fatima Mansions and seeks local engagement and Garda resources; the Tánaiste will raise the matter with the Justice Minister and consider community and policing investment.

Dublin South-Central is experiencing huge levels of antisocial behaviour around the inner city. Shootings and petrol bombings have become more common in the past fortnight. I have been working on this, particularly in the Fatima Mansions area but also in other areas, for the past six years.

The last straw was when little ones were told to feck off back to their apartment and they were not to come out when they hear the sound of the ice cream man in the van. It is unsupportable. I ask the Tánaiste to meet the local representatives. An Garda Síochána is asking for extra resources in this area. We had a fantastic meeting last week that I arranged and all stakeholders came to it. We are really serious about tackling this. We need support, encouragement and the Tánaiste's say-so.

I thank the Deputy for raising this issue and highlighting in the Dáil the concerns of the community around the Fatima Mansions area and other parts of her constituency, along with the need for resourcing. On foot of the Deputy raising it, I will raise the issue with the Minister for justice. I am sure the Deputy has done this but she can share that stakeholder engagement piece with the Minister. We need to continue to invest more in communities along with supporting the Garda in terms of its numbers. We will endeavour to do both in the budget next week. If the Deputy wants to send that information on to the Minister, Deputy O'Callaghan, I will also contact him on foot of this.
