The Department assessed the aluminium levels as posing negligible risk to animal health and the food chain, with no related increase in reported animal health problems.
139. Deputy Mattie McGrath asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine his views on the impact of high aluminium levels in the public water supply in South Tipperary which has found to be as high as 12 times the prescribed EU level; the impact that this may have on animals and our food systems as animals have been drinking this water for some period of time; the guidance available from his Department in relation to the safe levels of aluminium for livestock; if he will examine this matter; and issue guidance on the matter for farmers who are seeking guidance. My Department has reviewed the concentrations of aluminium identified in water in this case, and the conclusion is that the current risk to animal health, and the food chain, is negligible . Additionally, my Regional Veterinary Laboratory Service has not received any reports of an increase in specific animal health problems over the same period (September to October) that could be related to this matter.
