The Minister said the Teaching Council alone handles teacher registration, while its Recognition team will contact the applicant directly about his fee issue.
62. Deputy Cathal Crowe asked the Minister for Education and Youth if she will intervene in the case of a constituent (details supplied) facing an unfair duplicate €440 registration fee from the Teaching Council due to protracted administrative delays; if the council has the power to issue manual fee waivers in such instances; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The Teaching Council is the body with the statutory authority and responsibility for the regulation of the teaching profession in Ireland including the registration of teachers in the State.
The Teaching Council register teachers under the Teaching Council Act 2001-2015 and in line with the Teaching Council Registration Regulations 2025. Per the legislation, my department has no role in the registration of individual teachers.
In line with Section 23 (1) of the Teaching Council Act 2001-2015, the Council may determine fees, subject to the consent of the Minister, in relation to the performance of its functions, the provision of services and the carrying on of its activities.
The Recognition team at the Teaching Council have informed me that they will liaise with the applicant directly and they will advise him directly regarding his application.
