Defence Forces

Summary

The Defence Forces continuously review ordnance safety and suitability, but withheld holster types and retention standards for operational security reasons.

184. Deputy Ken O'Flynn asked the Minister for Defence the type and retention standard of holsters issued with sidearms to members of the Defence Forces; whether any review of holster safety was carried out by the Defence Forces following the incidents involving Garda issue holsters in June 2020; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Helen McEntee Minister for Defence Fine Gael

I am advised by the military authorities that the Defence Forces continuously monitor and review the performance of all items of ordnance in military service in order to ensure that they remain safe for personnel to use and are fit for the military purpose for which they are intended. It would not be appropriate to disclose specific details of the holsters in use by the Defence Forces for operational security reasons.
