Animal Culls
Coillte is responsible for managing deer on its forest estate, and the Minister referred questions on hunting licences and complaints to the company.
387. Deputy Mairéad Farrell asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine to outline the regulations for deer hunting licenses issued by Coillte; the way in which license holders are required to engage with privately owned land and neighbouring landowners; the steps that Coillte takes in the event that these regulations are breached by license holders; and if there is a mechanism for landowners to complain to Coillte regarding the behaviour of deer hunting license holders. Coillte was established as a commercial state company with private limited status under the Forestry Act, 1988, to become custodian and manager of the national forest estate. The company is currently managing 440,000 hectares of land (7% of the total land area of Ireland), and its day-to-day operations, such as the management of deer in its forest estate, are a matter for the company.
I have directed the specific question raised to Coillte for direct reply to the Deputy.
