An Post delivery failures

Summary

Gogarty cites delayed and misdelivered post in his constituency. The Taoiseach disputes that the problem is widespread and will seek an updated performance report.

The postal service is in tatters. I have heard that it is bad enough in the Taoiseach's constituency. I have heard a lot of stories recently in my constituency. One lady had no post for six weeks. Suddenly ten letters, some of which were from early September, were shoved in her mailbox. A public services card was delivered to the wrong address. This would be typed. Post did not arrive for three days and when the postperson was queried, the post was found to be in the van. I was handed a letter from a postman from another estate with a totally different name. We do have the new longer routes so a lot of staff are leaving. There is also the suggestion that parcels have been prioritised over letters. The service is not great. The Government can attach performance metrics and service retention clauses to An Post and also hold the board and CEO accountable. Will it try to do that given that An Post is autonomous but, at the same time, it should not be allowed to get away with a woeful service?

That is not our experience. I do not think that is uniform across the country, to be fair, and I would not like to use the phrase "in tatters". I will certainly ask the Minister if he can get an up-to-date performance report from the CEO of An Post.
