Decisions on Public Petitions Received
Everyone is very welcome to the public session of our meeting. I need to read some formal notices. I remind members of the constitutional requirement that they must be physically present within the confines of the place where Parliament has chosen to sit, namely, Leinster House, in order to participate in public meetings. I will not permit members to participate where they are not adhering to this constitutional requirement. Therefore, any member who attempts to participate from outside the precincts will be asked to leave the meeting.
I now propose that we will give consideration to the petitions that we have this evening. Is that agreed? Agreed. The first petition is in the name of Mr. Shane Cusack and the title is "Equality in Domestic Violence Services". We corresponded with the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration and we have a response. The proposal is that we send that correspondence to Mr. Cusack for his observation and that it be returned to us within a fortnight. Is that agreed? Agreed.
We have a second petition, also in the name of Mr. Cusack, entitled "The Proper Recognition of Domestic Abuse Victims". This, again, is a very serious issue. We have correspondence from the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration. The proposal is that we publish that and forward it to Mr. Cusack for his information and comment. On the basis of the comments on all of these, we will have further consideration. Is that agreed? Agreed.
The third petition, also in the name of Mr. Cusack, is entitled, "The Correction of Expense Levels for Free Legal Aid". Given all the circumstances and the media chat, this is a very topical issue. We have a response from the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration to Mr. Cusack's correspondence. The proposal is that we publish that and forward it to Mr. Cusack for his response. Is that agreed? Agreed.
The fourth petition is entitled, "Reform Legislation Relating to Antisocial Behaviour in Youths" and is in the name of Ms Samantha Byrne. There is some correspondence from the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration in relation to this. The proposal is that the committee forward that correspondence and keep an eye on ongoing developments because this is an issue that has been in the news. We know that there is legislation proposed. We will track the timing of that and factor it into our consideration but, for the moment, the proposal is that we send that correspondence to the petitioner and publish it on the website. Is that agreed? Agreed.
That concludes our consideration of public petitions this evening. I invite members of the public to submit petitions via our online portal, which is available at petitions.oireachtas.ie. A petition may be addressed to the Houses of the Oireachtas on a matter of general public concern or interest or an issue of public policy.
Do members have any other issues that they wish to raise?
Comment on this
No. I thank the secretariat and all the members of the committee who do all the hard work. We get to see the pretty pictures in front of us. It is unbelievable.
