Seanad

Request under Standing Order 29.

I have notice from Senator McGowan regarding a motion he wishes to move under Standing Order 29. I call on the Senator to give notice of the motion before I give my ruling.

Comment on this

I wish to move a motion for the Adjournment of the Seanad on a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration. This matter involves the need for the Minister for the Marine to make a statement on the religious discrimination claimed against the Foyle Fishery Commission for which it was convicted and fined £40,000.

Comment on this

The Senator has moved the motion.

Technically the Cathaoirleach can stop me at that point but I ask his indulgence because of the gravity of this matter and the public's perception of it. I request that this matter be dealt with now and I also request the resignation of the two commissioners——

Comment on this

The Senator has made his point.

Comment on this

I ask for the resignation of the manager of the Foyle Fishery Commission who was found guilty of religious discrimination.

Comment on this

The Senator has moved the motion and I ask him to resume his seat while I give my decision in connection with it.

Comment on this

May I second the motion?

Comment on this

No, it is not in order to do so. I have given careful consideration to the matter raised by Senator McGowan but I do not consider it to be a matter contemplated by Standing Order 29. I regret, therefore, that I have to rule it out of order.

Comment on this

I and the people affected by this matter regret the decision of the Chair.

As I indicated earlier, if another form of action is taken I will give the matter further consideration.
