Racist terminology in public debate

Summary

Senator Ó Clochartaigh objects to unsubstantiated terminology about ethnic minorities and calls for a debate on racism and racist language.

I add a note of caution following the statement made by Senator Terry Leyden on the use of terminology with regard to ethnic minorities. It is something that has become more prevalent in the public sphere recently, especially with regard to Travellers, the Roma community, etc. The judicial process has not been gone through and such a statement should not be made until it is found to be true. I call on the Senator to retract it at some stage.

I dealt with that matter when the Senator was speaking.
