Election of Pope Francis

Summary

Senators welcome Pope Francis’s election, discuss his Irish railway connection and hopes for reform, while Senator Coghlan also defends the Government’s response to mortgage arrears.

This is a first. For once I find myself in total agreement with Senator Mark Daly.

He must be infallible.

I heartily concur with everything he said about the new Bishop of Rome. He was accurate in that respect. This man offers great hope. That is why I agree so much with what has been said. It is a little known fact-----

A Senator

The Senator has met the man.

Comment on this

No, I have never met the man. His father was a railway worker and the man who was responsible for the railways in Argentina was an Irish engineer named Coghlan.

Was he from Killarney?

Comment on this

No, they originated in Offaly. Senator David Norris’s mother was from Laois, the next-door county.

Will the Senator be invited to the embassy?

I urge Members who might be in Buenos Aires to visit the Coghlan region. There is a railway station named, Coghlan, which is spelled correctly. I concur with everything Senator Mark Daly said about the new Pontiff. The name Francis is wonderful.

Senator Mark Daly was totally wrong when he continued on the other subject. He should never have left the first issue. The Government is treating the mortgage arrears crisis with all seriousness.
