Dispute over historical comparisons

Summary

Senators clash over language comparing the crèche abuse with historical atrocities; the Chair rejects points of order and calls for order.

The Deputy Leader does not need to.

Comment on this

I thank the Senator. I will not respond to it.

The development of Narrow Water Bridge was also referred to by Senator Mary Moran.

On a point of order, I do not particularly need a lecture from the Deputy Leader on the language I use. As a student of the period of history that I mentioned - obviously, the Deputy Leader is not - the parallels with the manner in which the people concerned treated those children are very stark.

That is not a point of order.

I used that language in order to highlight the horrors we witnessed on television last night. I do not need a lecture from the Deputy Leader.

I inform the Senator that my grandfather was in a Nazi prison.

I am fully aware of the Deputy Leader's background, which is all the more reason she should have understood what I was trying to say.

May we have order in the Chamber, please?
