Seanad
‹ Order of Business

Amendment and next sitting

Summary

The Deputy Leader reiterates that the reports require proper debates, formally deletes the three motions, and announces that the Seanad will sit again the following Tuesday.

In response to the point made by Senator Paschal Mooney about the motions, I want to have full debates on the reports; all of us who were involved in producing them want the same. I do not think it would have been appropriate to arrange for a Minister with no knowledge of their contents to come into the House to debate them. We did try to find a Minister who would have been able to do so. At 7 p.m. yesterday, however, it became apparent that we would not be able to do so and we had no other business to discuss. I have proposed an amendment to delete the motions from the Order of Business on the basis that Members have objected to their being taken without debate. In the extraordinary circumstances we were facing, it was understandable to place a set of motions on the Order Paper in the sense that they simply noted the reports. We had to place some business on the Order Paper or else we would not have been able to sit and at 6 p.m. yesterday I said we would be sitting. I stand over that decision, but I also stand over the decision to delete the motions from the Order of Business. I promise that we will have full debates on the reports in the future.

The Deputy Leader has proposed an amendment to the Order of Business: "That Nos. 41, 42 and 44 be deleted from the Order of Business for today." Is the amendment agreed to? Agreed. That means that Senator Jillian van Turnhout's amendment cannot be dealt with.
