Urgent allocation of vacant houses
The Leader supports Senator Burke’s proposal for rapid allocation of refurbished vacant houses, saying local authorities should prevent properties standing empty for weeks while families await accommodation.
Senator Colm Burke mentioned the development of greenways, the funding of €10 million and the development of vacant houses. I agree with him in that regard.

Global warming: blame the Government.

As the Senator is hoarse since yesterday, he should give his throat a break.

What about global warming? The Leader should blame it on Fianna Fáil also.

On the delays in houses being allocated, I agree totally that-----

We will see it in the results of the elections next week.

It is the hardship being suffered by families for which we are blaming Fianna Fáil.

I agree totally that local authorities should be able to allocate houses as a matter of urgency within a very short period of time. We have seen what happens when they are left for two or three weeks because it then goes on for longer and longer. I agree on the need to have some policy. A large amount of money is being put in place by the Government to refurbish houses that are locked up, but there is a need for local authorities to allocate these houses as a matter of urgency. I saw people on television during the week, whether on "Prime Time" or otherwise, who would be more than delighted to accept and do up houses themselves in order to satisfy their housing needs. There is a need for local authorities to act in that regard.

As I mentioned, Senator Fidelma Healy Eames also raised the matter. I addressed it yesterday when she raised it on the Order of Business.
