Free travel and political recriminations

Summary

The Leader and opposition Senators dispute the Government’s record on welfare cuts and whether the free-travel pass is at risk, amid repeated interruptions and arguments over election results and earlier medical-card assurances.

That is pathetic. Why did the Government parties do so badly in the local elections?

Comment on this

Come on. We need to get past that type of nonsense.

Comment on this
Paddy Burke An Cathaoirleach Fine Gael

The Leader, without interruption.

Comment on this

At the doorsteps people said the Government was far worse than Fianna Fáil.

Comment on this

The Members opposite are smiling because they have realised themselves, as I told people yesterday-----

Comment on this

It is disingenuous.

Comment on this

They are scaremongering.

Comment on this

We are thinking of the results of the local elections. That is why we are so happy.

Comment on this
Paddy Burke An Cathaoirleach Fine Gael

The Leader, without interruption.

Comment on this

If the Senators will not allow me to reply-----

Comment on this

People were saying the Government is worse than Fianna Fáil.

Comment on this

I know the truth is bitter but they will have to listen.

Comment on this

The Government got its answer on 23 May.

Comment on this
Paddy Burke An Cathaoirleach Fine Gael

The Leader should not invite trouble.

Comment on this

Senators were told yesterday in the House----

Comment on this

How many European seats does Fianna Fáil hold?

Comment on this
Paddy Burke An Cathaoirleach Fine Gael

The Leader, without interruption.

Comment on this

I have a point of order.

Comment on this

That was a national election.

Comment on this
Paddy Burke An Cathaoirleach Fine Gael

I call Senator O'Donovan on a point of order.

Comment on this

I should clarify for the Leader that we are smiling at his exuberance.

Comment on this

I thank the Senator.

Comment on this
Paddy Burke An Cathaoirleach Fine Gael

That was not a point of order. I ask the Leader not to invite trouble.

Comment on this

His sartorial elegance today is fabulous.

Comment on this

I have no intention of inviting trouble.

Comment on this

I have been provoked from the other side.

Comment on this

The silly season is approaching.

Comment on this

I indicated yesterday that comments on the free travel pass amounted to scaremongering from the other side of the House.

Comment on this

He said that about discretionary medical cards.

Comment on this

There is no question whatever of the travel pass being withdrawn from people.

Comment on this

It is a review.

Comment on this

I told Senators about the review.

Comment on this

The same was said about medical cards.

Comment on this

People clearly did not listen to what went on in the House or else they were not here yesterday.

Comment on this
Paddy Burke An Cathaoirleach Fine Gael

The Leader, without interruption.

Comment on this

I asked the Leader about it yesterday.

Comment on this

What happened with the medical card review?

Comment on this

The Senators opposite were never very good with freedom of speech and their party tried to restrict it many times.

Comment on this
Paddy Burke An Cathaoirleach Fine Gael

I ask the Leader not to invite trouble.

Comment on this

A right wing party married to the left wing.

Comment on this

I know Senators do not want to listen but allow me to get a word in and remind them of the cuts introduced by the Fianna Fáil-led Government. It abolished the Christmas bonus and it cut the carer's allowance, disability allowance-----

Comment on this

Wrong. We did not abolish-----

Comment on this

-----the blind allowance, the widow pension-----

Comment on this

What was Fine Gael going to do? It was to reinstate everything.

Comment on this

-----and the invalidity pension.

Comment on this

It was going to reinstate everything but it did nothing.

Comment on this

Fianna Fáil did not cut it once but twice.

Comment on this

What about Fine Gael's promises?

Comment on this

They have a cheek at this stage and a brass neck to speak about this Government's cuts.

Comment on this

What has Fine Gael done since taking office? It has gone even further.

Comment on this

That is the current position, whether Senators like it or not.

Comment on this

Fine Gael has gone even further and Senators do not like it.

Comment on this

I have no intention of letting those opposite shout me down.

Comment on this
Paddy Burke An Cathaoirleach Fine Gael

We must have order.

Comment on this

I am not shouting down the Leader.
