Bank security response
The Leader says he will raise the withdrawal of bank security services with the Justice Minister and considers a broader law-and-order debate.
Senator Paul Coghlan referred to the restoration of the cross on Carrauntoohil and complimented Beaufort Community Council on its work in this regard.
Senator Ned O'Sullivan referred to the withdrawal of security services for the banks, recounted details of recent raids in Ratoath and Raheny and requested that the matter be revisited. I will certainly bring it to the attention of the Minister for Justice and Equality. Perhaps we might engage in an overall debate on law and order issues early in the new year.
Senator Michael Mullins referred to the need for rehabilitation services for people with addiction problems. We had a debate recently on the issue of mental health and this is a matter we can certainly discuss. I agree with the Senator on the need for better access to rehabilitation services for persons with addiction problems.
I welcome Senator Fidelma Healy Eames's indication that the Catholic Church has provided 68 places for homeless persons. That is excellent news.
Senator Mark Daly referred to cuts to the housing programme. This is not the day to become involved in politics around this issue. I will note, however, that the amount of money spent on social housing in the boom years was practically nil.
