West Limerick waste facility

Summary

Senator O’Brien supports opposition to the proposed gasification and waste-importing project near Askeaton, warning of environmental damage.

I second what Senator James Heffernan said about the proposed waste management gasification, which is a new word for me, instead of incineration. It makes one feel better to use "gasification" instead of "incineration". He referred to the old Gortadroma landfill site to which tyres from all over the world will be imported which we will incinerate. Goodness knows, the environment will once again be destroyed. I welcome Nuala and Pat Geoghegan who are in the Visitors Gallery and who are from Askeaton, County Limerick. The Aughinish plant and Moneypoint are near their farm. If the EPA allows this new waste management business to go forward the area will surely compete for being the most polluted small area on the planet. We will become a global player. We need a debate on the matter, environmental pollution in this country and the EPA and what it is not doing to contain industry and its ruination of the environment and climate that we so proudly try to protect but which we are not protecting.
