Registration of Wills Bill

Summary

Senator Leyden asked Members to support his Registration of Wills Bill and described its long history and his willingness to accept amendments. Senators offered short supportive remarks, and he closed by thanking colleagues and reiterating the Bill’s value.

I thank the Leader and our party Whip for putting on the Order Paper today No. 4, Registration of Wills Bill 2016. It is in my name and co-sponsored by Senators Catherine Ardagh and Lorraine Clifford-Lee. I ask every Member to support the Bill. This is my third attempt to introduce it. I made an attempt in 2005, at which time the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport was a Senator, and in 2011.

The moral of the story.

The plan is still the same. There are quite a number of new Members present. All parties backed the legislation initially and then there was a slight hiccup on the next occasion, for some reason. Now we have a new Seanad that is more likely to consider the matter afresh. I will be available throughout the day. I ask for support on Second Stage, when we will go into more detail. I am willing to accept amendments from Members and to discuss them in due course in the new year. The Bill is worthwhile and I ask for the full support of my colleagues.
