IVF treatment proposals

Summary

Senator Davitt sought clarification on the Minister for Health’s IVF plans and argued treatment should not be limited to medical card holders.

I am looking for clarification on the Minister for Health’s proposals on IVF treatment. One in six couples encounters problems with fertility. It could be larger than that. From what I have read, my understanding is that the Minister’s proposal will only make it available to medical card holders. Working class people and taxpayers have had enough of being treated like third-class citizens behind the wealthy and privileged classes, and now behind medical card holders. I propose we encompass the working classes in this scheme.

As the average cost for this procedure is €5,000, will the Minister include the working classes? There is currently a 20% tax break for IVF. It should certainly be increased to 100% to help those just above the breadline who are working and hope to start a family. It would give them that break they need to start a family.
