Sea-Fisheries dispute
A prolonged argument followed over whether the Minister had consulted fishing organisations over two years or only at the last minute. Senators across the House challenged the Leader’s claims, the Leader insisted the Minister had met the industry repeatedly, and the exchange became increasingly heated over rights, a sea border, and whether the Bill should proceed.
What about the past two years?

I listened to Senators on this issue.

The Government is seeking to restore the rights of our Northern neighbours, which our own fishermen have enjoyed and enjoy at the moment. It is right to pass the Bill today and Members opposite know that. Do we really want a hard border for our fishermen?
Comment on this
Not a single thing has been done for two years and not a single fisherman was spoken to in two years.
Comment on this
Like Mrs. May, the Government has sat on its hands for two years.

Members opposite are saying to fishermen in County Down that they do not have the same rights as fishermen in Dundalk.
Comment on this
That is not what we are saying.
Comment on this
Not at all. There has been two years of nothing.
Comment on this
There is irony in the inconsistency here.
Comment on this
Dundalk fishermen should have more rights than County Down fisherman to fish in Republic of Ireland waters.

The Minister met with the industry and spoke last night on the subject.
Comment on this
Last night? What about the past two years?

Can the Leader clarify if the Minister met the fishing representative organisations?
Comment on this
The Chair has given me the floor.

Can the Leader clarify-----
Comment on this
This is another Second Stage speech.
Comment on this
The Leader interrupts me because he knows what I am going to ask him. Will he clarify whether the Minister met the fishing organisations in the past two years over their concerns about this legislation?
Comment on this
The Minister with responsibility for fisheries-----
Comment on this
There is obviously no meeting of minds on this issue so maybe the Leader can move on and we will vote on it.
Comment on this
The Minister with responsibility for fisheries met the fishing organisations 40 times in that period.
Comment on this
The Leader is avoiding giving an answer.
Comment on this
Some of the Members on the opposite side want no hard border but want a sea border.
Comment on this
The Leader is talking nonsense.
Comment on this
They should reflect on themselves.

The Leader is talking nonsense.

The 29 March deadline is approaching. Rather than add to the chaos of Brexit, Members opposite should reflect on themselves and their behaviour around this Bill. The Minister is very willing to engage with the fishing industry, as he has done 40 times.
Comment on this
Did he engage 40 times on this legislation?
Comment on this
Given that I am in conciliatory mood and recognising that there is a game of politics being played by Members opposite-----
