Enterprise week awards

Summary

Senator Scahill acknowledged enterprise week and congratulated Roscommon businesses and winners recognised at the county enterprise awards.

I am sure the Leader is aware that this is enterprise week. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the enterprise awards in Roscommon and I want to acknowledge some of the winners. In the social enterprise category, we had Triest Press in Roscommon, an organisation providing a great service to the community while The Upholstery Company, Dunbar Pharma and Waldron Family Meats were also recognised. Tully Forge, an engineering company in Ballaghaderreen, was the overall winner in Roscommon and will now go on to represent the county in the national finals in June. I would like to acknowledge them all and encourage everybody to go out and support our local enterprise offices, LEOs. I also encourage businesses to get in touch with their LEOs and to look at the national enterprise hub where the Minister, Deputy Burke, has collated all of the supports for businesses throughout the country under one banner and in one location.

I also want to raise the issue of road signs, direction signs and speed signs throughout the entire country. We still see destruction following Storm Éowyn last year, with signs pointing in the wrong direction. As well as this, the general maintenance and upkeep of signs throughout the country are in a very poor state at present, especially in country areas. Some of them are very hard to read. Some of them are overgrown and some of them have fallen back. Considering that €8 million was allocated in 2025 for the replacement of speed signs, a not insignificant sum has been invested in these roadside signs. Perhaps we could have a debate, or perhaps a directive could be issued to local authorities that ahead of the summer season, when we will have a lot of tourists visiting our lovely island, an extra effort may be put into ensuring the signs are pointing in the right direction, are legible and that nothing is obstructing them.
