Faulkner family tragedy

Summary

Senator Ryan offers condolences to the Faulkner family after two deaths in quick succession and notes the support being provided locally.

Last Friday, the family of Scarlett Faulkner brought her remains to St. Munchin's Church in Clancy Strand in Limerick and they said their goodbyes. Tragically, two days later, the body of her brother, Jason Faulkner, was recovered from the Abbey river in Limerick. It is a second devastating blow for the family and friends of the tight-knit community and I would like to extend my deepest condolences to them. The HSE Mid-West is very involved in supporting the wider group and family group. The local resource officer for suicide is on site with the family, the Limerick Traveller Network is on site and the National Office for Suicide Prevention is supporting. The Minister of State, Deputy Butler, is co-ordinating closely with the HSE Mid-West lead, Sandra Broderick, on this matter. I would ask if we could have at an appropriate time a debate on suicide prevention and mental health challenges across our country with our young people and to bring the Minister in so that she can update us on the work that she and her Department are doing in this area.
