Water safety in Donegal
Senator Boyle echoed concerns about water safety, urging people to check life rings and stay vigilant at busy beaches.
I concur with my fellow Senators' comments on water safety. It is an important issue, especially in rural counties like my own county of Donegal. With the weather being so good, the beaches are going to be full this weekend. There will be large amounts of people at them. I ask people to be cautious and vigilant of what is going on. Before they go into the water, they should please check the life ring buoys are in place because, when accidents happen, it is the first bit of equipment that everybody needs to know where it is, that it is there and that it is not damaged or tampered with. If there are any problems with it, people should notify An Garda Síochána or Water Safety Ireland. If people see somebody in difficulty, they should ring 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
We have beautiful beaches all over this country and they are going to be inundated for the next few days, so I am asking people to please be careful. They should check the tides and the currents. Make sure that the ring buoys are all there and working. They are the one piece of equipment that is there to save lives.
