Animal euthanasia regulations

Summary

Senator Brady called for stronger rules governing the euthanising of animals after reports from farms in Roscommon and Clare.

I wish to discuss a case that is ongoing all over social media where animals were euthanised on a farm in Roscommon and in County Clare last week. Forget about the rights and wrongs or who is right and who is wrong. The manner in which the animals were euthanised is where I see a problem. I call on the Minister for agriculture to strengthen the regulations around euthanising these animals. There have to be stronger regulations. It was overseen by the Department even though the Department did not carry out the euthanising of the animals. I am very passionate about how animals are treated, as everybody in this House knows, and I would never like to see any animals mistreated. There is an ongoing case of animal cruelty but we need to see stronger regulation around how animals are euthanised.

I wish everyone in this House an enjoyable summer. It is probably the first time I can say all the work is done before we actually go home. With the weather, the turf is home, the hay is done the silage is made and the feet are up. We are surely going to enjoy the summer. I wish all the teams in the hurling and football the very best. I personally would like to see Mayo bring home the Sam Maguire, as would everybody else because I do feel their time has come - let us hope Mike Kennelly is not here – and let us hope it does go west. If it does go west, it will be full of people from all over Ireland. It has been long enough and maybe this is their time. Maybe the bad luck is gone after all.
