Hot school meals

Summary

Senator Flynn welcomes the hot school meals review but asks the Minister to reconsider requiring children to eat lunch as early as 11 a.m.

I welcome the review of the hot school meals scheme for children. I encourage the Minister to examine the timing of the lunches for children. Many are expected to have a hot meal at 11 a.m. The Minister needs to look into that.

I heard many of my colleagues speak about how young people have to leave the country. I have been in contact with numerous youth organisations over the past two weeks. They are extremely worried about funding for communities and young people in the country. We hear about young people leaving the country, but the Government need to invest in young people in the budget in two weeks. They are the most vulnerable people in our society. So much is expected of young people in today's Ireland and there is no hope. One youth worker said to me there is no hope to be able to look after our young people. We tend to put young people down and look at them as being the problem while we invest in our gardaí, which I welcome - we need gardaí on the streets. We need to invest in youth services. I am a qualified youth worker. I was first introduced to politics through youth work. It is informal education and sets up young people for life. It educates them around drugs, responsibilities and opens up many doors of opportunities for young people. The House should write to the Minister collectively - I can draft a letter - to ask that the most vulnerable people in our society, that is, young people between the ages of ten and 25, are not forgotten about in the budget.
