Navan commuter bus reliability

Summary

Senator Nelson Murray seeks a debate on unreliable and overcrowded NX bus services from Navan, citing cancellations, delays and unpredictable journey times.

I am jealous of Senator Byrne talking about extra trains to commute to Dublin. I will talk about commuting but we do not even have one train. I would appreciate a debate with the Minister for Transport on people from commuter counties coming into Dublin. For people travelling from Navan to Dublin the NX bus route is a vital service but for far too many commuters, getting to work or college can feel like a lottery every day. People are dealing with overcrowding at peak times, cancelled services, buses arriving late and journey times that vary enormously from one day to the next. The NTA has acknowledged that capacity is insufficient at peak times, particularly on morning services from Navan to Johnstown. Although this may sound critical, the NX route is a brilliant service. It runs every 20 minutes and when you get it at a later time, it is a great way of getting into Dublin and of coming home. We just need extra buses and extra drivers at peak times. There is congestion on the M3 and through Dublin, and it is causing significant delays.

These are not just statistics. People are leaving home much earlier than they should have to. We all know family time is great for our mental and physical health. It is great for us to have that time but people are having to leave early to make sure they get a seat and arrive at work or college on time. Some passengers report journeys taking two hours or more. At other times, you can get to Dublin from Navan in 45 or 50 minutes. Recent Bus Éireann service notices show the NX service has been cancelled on a number of occasions. Navan is growing, passenger numbers are growing and demand is clearly there. People need a bus service they can rely on, one that has enough capacity, is on time and gets them from Navan to Dublin without daily uncertainty.

I appreciate the Minister is putting a lot of work into getting the Navan rail service. I commend him on that. He was at the launch of it, which is fantastic, but it will be quite a while before we have the train. The people of Navan should not have to leave an hour early simply because they do not know whether the bus will turn up or not. If we could get a debate on that, I would appreciate it.
