Rush and Lusk station capacity

Summary

Senator Clifford-Lee highlights overcrowded car parks and inadequate public transport at Rush and Lusk railway stations, seeking action for north County Dublin commuters.

It will be no surprise to the Acting Leader to hear me mention public transport. It is a huge issue in north County Dublin, where I am based. There is a particular issue with the train stations in north County Dublin. They are at capacity very early in the morning. There has been an emerging, growing and particular issue around Rush and Lusk train station. I had a lot of contact this morning regarding the situation at that train station. The car park is at capacity very early in the morning, and neither town is within walking distance of the train station. There is no reliable bus link to the train station either, so people are forced to drive and park at the station. People who contacted me this morning were in tears describing how they left for the train station at half eight in the morning but not one spot was available. People are missing out on work, college and appointments in town as a result of this.

There has been a huge volume of building in Lusk and Rush in recent years, but there has been no supporting infrastructure increase in public transport provision in the area. The car park at Rush and Lusk train station is quite big compared with the other car parks, but it is impossible for people to get a parking spot, which makes the only reliable public transport offering in north County Dublin unreliable. People cannot guarantee that they can get a spot at the train station to get into town for work or an appointment, as I said.

We need to look at what we are doing for commuters. North County Dublin is absorbing the housing needs of Dublin. I have said time and again in this House that we need to put the supporting infrastructure in place. While lovely houses are being built, it is not enough to give people the opportunity of buying houses; we need to provide the public services. People are moving into these areas. The glossy brochures detail that a train station is located nearby. That station, however, is practically unusable for the vast majority of people who want to access the train. I ask for a debate on our growing communities. I know Senator Comyn beside me raises similar issues. Growing communities on the outskirts of Dublin are suffering due to a lack of infrastructure. We need to have joined-up thinking in this House when it comes to the provision of infrastructure for these communities.
