Recognition for An Post workers
Senator Duffy advocates for An Post workers, emphasising their long service and importance to rural and isolated communities.
It is great to see Paraic in the chair as Acting Leader today. I wish him well. I would like to advocate on behalf of An Post postal workers who have given a lifetime of service to the organisation, who have been at the coalface of community and rural life down through the years and who have been a touchpoint for people in areas of rural isolation and being that link for people who needed it most in good times and in bad. As many would know, the merger took place in 1984 between the Department of Posts and Telegraphs and An Post. I have been in touch with two gentlemen over the past 24 hours who are still affected by a lack of resolution in their pension status. One retired in July 2022 after 42 years of service, but when his pension arrived, only 91% of his basic pay allowances were taken into account, with the pension increase capped at 2% per year. They have given a lifetime of service, dedication and work to the State and to community and should not have to fight their corner for what they have been committed to and what is right and just for them to receive.
I am asking that Ministers and the Government knock heads together and deliver for these people as soon as possible. They have given a lifetime of commitment and service to it. The workers did not choose to leave the organisation. The State moved them into a new working pattern and it was meant to protect workers who transferred on the vesting day. It was not supposed to be less favourable than those positions that were held as civil servants. We need to protect and support and make sure that we follow through on commitments that are made. I ask that the Government deliver without delay across all ministries, that it not pass the buck, and that it deliver for these postal workers.
