ACRES grazing extension
Senator Brady welcomes an extra month for ACRES participants to graze geese and swan action land, easing pressure during a fodder shortage; a visitor welcome follows.
I have good news for the farming community this morning, in that the Minister, Deputy Heydon, has extended the time to allow farmers under the agri-climate rural environment scheme, ACRES, geese and swan action to graze for an extra month. Especially when we are coming into a fodder crisis and everyone knows that there is a shortage in the country, an extra month for these farmers to graze on that land will certainly ease a burden over the winter. I thank the Minister and his officials for bringing this initiative forward because these are situations where the burden is on the farmer, who is heavily penalised if they graze this land. They usually shut them off at the end of September but now farmers get an extra month, with the weather good and everything else. I thank the Minister and his officials for this extension.
Going home yesterday evening through our capital, it was mind-boggling to see how many people were on bikes, but also how many were on bikes without lights, dressed in black with no hi-vis, etc. I encountered at least three people who could have been in an accident with me. They were cycling on the wrong side of the road facing traffic and with no hi-vis or lights on them. It is no great wonder that so many people are knocked off bikes when this is going on in the capital. There has to be some law whereby if you go out in the pitch of night, you must have a light or a hi-vis vest. If people are found without them, the bikes should at least be lifted off people them and some fine issued.
