Diabetes awareness
Senator Fitzpatrick marked Diabetes Awareness Month and praised her niece’s resilience living with diabetes.
I, too, offer my condolences to the family and friends of Ciara Mageean. She was an inspirational woman and human being. We can all learn from her, such a beautiful human being. Do not take life for granted and she never did. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam.
November is Diabetes Awareness Month. In Ireland today, one in 18 people live with diabetes. My own niece is inspirational. She was diagnosed with diabetes when she was just eight years of age. She is great. Cara is courageous and never lets it stop her. She plays camogie, dances, sings, swims, etc. She does everything and she is fabulous. I want to give a shout out to Cara and to everybody suffering with diabetes, their parents siblings, schoolmates, SNAs, teachers and everybody. Diabetes is a serious illness and people like Cara show that it is not an illness that will stop people.
I wish to commend the Minister for Health. Earlier this year she launched a national diabetes strategy. It is a world-class strategy. However, a strategy without funding will not treat one single patient. Therefore, I would appreciate if the Leader would arrange a debate with the Minister on her national diabetes strategy, specifically to address the calls made by Diabetes Ireland for regional diabetes clinical leads to be appointed across all of the six HSE regions, for continuous glucose monitoring technology to be expanded to all type 1 patients and for specialist nurse posts to be funded so that youth clinics can be put in place and protect teenagers as they transition to adult services so that all young people will have an equal transition and equal support. My niece, Cara, has benefited from Temple Street hospital, where amazing work is being done. I would really appreciate if the Leader could ask the Minister for Health to come here and address the issues of funding for the national diabetes strategy and outline the progress that has been made with its implementation.
