Lahinch-Calluragh water treatment scheme

Summary

Senator Conway objected to the proposed scheme’s location, citing environmental concerns and insufficient consultation with local communities.

I, too, would like to be associated with the tremendous tributes that have been paid in the last couple of days to Ciara Mageean, a wonderful sportsperson and Irish person. May she rest in peace.

I thank the Leader for his support with Uisce Éireann on the Lahinch-Calluragh water treatment scheme that essentially just appeared as a solution to the difficulties with water and sewage being experienced in the Lahinch and Ennistymon communities. This proposal appeared in an area that is not appropriate and has serious environmental challenges without the consent of and proper consultation with the local community. I raised this issue here on two separate occasions with the Leader and he very kindly agreed to write to the Minister supporting my call for a non-statutory public consultation to take place on this proposal. I am delighted to say that Uisce Éireann has agreed to a non-statutory public consultation, which will take place later this month. I thank the Leader for writing to the Minister supporting this call because I have no doubt it helped, along with the campaign that the local community and I have been running. I also appreciate the Leader's suggestion about sitting down with the Minister to discuss the unsuitability of this scheme, but I suggest that we postpone that until after the non-statutory public consultation, given that it may resolve the problem anyway.

It is a result, it is welcome, and the people will now have the opportunity to make their case directly to Uisce Éireann as to why the proposed location of this badly-needed treatment facility is not appropriate and how Uisce Éireann needs to go back to the drawing board.
