Local Government (Support for Elected Members) Bill 2024
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would require the Minister to put in place a scheme giving every elected local councillor administrative support to help them do their public work. In practical terms, that means councillors would be able to get help with tasks like organising paperwork, correspondence, and other day-to-day support linked to their role. It would also amend the Local Government Act 2001 to add this new entitlement, and would take effect 90 days after being passed. The aim is to make it easier for elected members to do their jobs properly and serve their communities more effectively.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide administrative support for elected members of local authorities to assist in the performance of their duties; to amend the Local Government Act 2001; and to provide for related matters.
