Prohibition of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems Bill 2026

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The measure would make it an offence to test, develop, produce, acquire, stockpile, sell, deploy, retain, transfer, use, or transport autonomous weapons systems in Ireland, including parts and materials made for them. It would also stop public money being invested directly or indirectly in these weapons, and require those handling public investments to avoid them. Limited exceptions would allow the Defence Forces, Gardaí, or a person authorised by the Minister to seize, disable, or hand over such weapons for destruction. It also sets penalties of up to €5,000 or 12 months for summary cases, and up to €1 million or 10 years on indictment, with confiscation and destruction of equipment used in the offence.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to give effect to the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, production, transfer, development and investment in autonomous weapons systems.
