Old-age pension residency regulations

Summary

Keating clarified he was asking about the 15-year aggregate residency rule affecting refugees; Haughey said the change had been made the previous day, and noted citizens and non-citizens were treated alike for old-age pensions. Boland jokingly suggested his question may have influenced the change.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he proposes to introduce any changes into the regulations concerning the payment of old-age pensions to non-nationals resident in Ireland for many years.

Comment on this

No distinction is now drawn between citizens and non-citizens for old age pension purposes.

The question was badly worded. I was really concerned about the regulation which exists that people would have to live here on aggregate for 15 years. I am talking now about refugees——

That went yesterday.

I am pleased to hear that. I will have to look at the speech more closely.

When I saw the question I suspected the Deputy of having advance information of what was in the budget.

Comment on this

Perhaps my question influenced the Minister to a minor degree in making the submission to his colleague.
