‹ Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foreign Cattle Importation.

Foreign cattle imports and disease risks

Summary

The Minister said no Holstein cattle were imported in 1983 and that leptospirosis was not associated with the sole earlier importation, from Canada in 1974. He referred the question on other imported breeding-cattle breeds to a table in the Official Report.

Ned O'Keeffe Mr. E. O'Keeffe Fianna Fáil

asked the Minister for Agriculture the number of Holstein cattle imported in 1983; if he is satisfied that they are not disease risks; and if he has associated leptospirosis disease with these cattle importations.

Comment on this

The answer is none. The only importation of Holsteins to date was from Canada in 1974 and leptospirosis disease was not associated with that importation.

Ned O'Keeffe Mr. E. O'Keeffe Fianna Fáil

asked the Minister for Agriculture the number of foreign breeds of cattle imported into Ireland during 1983 and the names of the breeds.

Comment on this

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose to circulate it in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Imports of Breeding Cattle in 1983

Note: Imports of cattle from Northern Ireland are not included.
