Departmental responses to constituency representations

Summary

Mr. Blaney asked whether a recruitment ban was causing Departments to ignore Deputies’ representations and what recourse they had for negligence. The Chair ruled the question outside the scope of the listed question, and no substantive answer was given.

Will the Minister state if it is his ban on recruitment that is responsible for various Departments ignoring representations on behalf of constituents? Will the Minister tell me what recourse a Deputy has when he finds complete negligence on the part of certain Departments?

Question No. 11 deals specifically with a certain issue but the Deputy is now asking a general question.

Comment on this

Surely the way representations are dealt with must be connected with Question No. 11 and whether the system is working?

The Chair does not think so.

Comment on this

The Chair may not think so but God knows the Chair is long enough in the House to realise that the two matters are tied together and that the Deputy who put down the question wanted service.

No, he wanted a particular type of service.

Comment on this

Yes, if there is no one to give that service.
