Deputy Jennifer Whitmore asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the amount of Exchequer funding provided to Greyhound Racing Ireland in each of the past five years; the proportion of this funding allocated specifically to welfare measures; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Horse and Greyhound racing industries receive financial support from the State through the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund (the Fund) under Section 12 of the Horse and Greyhound Racing Act, 2001. This is distributed in accordance with Section 12(6), with 80% allocated to Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) and 20% to Rásaíocht Con Éireann (RCÉ).
Over the past five years, RCÉ has had an allocation as outlined below:
This Department issues an annual parameters letter to RCÉ which stipulates that a minimum of 10% of the total fund must be spent on welfare including integrity services. This requirement is met and exceeded annually by RCÉ.
