Digital for Care: A Digital Health Framework for Ireland 2024–2030 sets out the Government's policy for the digital transformation of health and social care services and provides a clear roadmap towards the full digitisation of healthcare records and information systems in Ireland.
A number of hospitals and health services have implemented electronic health record (EHR) or electronic clinical management systems to support the delivery of patient care. These EHRs vary in capability, with the one being implemented at CHI being the most extensive system to date. These deployments have generally occurred on a service-specific, specialty-specific or organisational basis over a number of years. Whilst some other sites have digitised aspects of the patient journey, none of these would be considered EHRs as such.
Significant examples include:
St. James's Hospital, where an enterprise EHR system has been deployed;
The five stand-alone maternity hospitals (and maternity unit at KGH), where the Maternal and Newborn Clinical Management System (MN-CMS), Ireland's first national enterprise EHR, is now fully deployed:
Cork University Maternity Hospital;
The Rotunda Hospital;
National Maternity Hospital;
University Hospital Kerry;
Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital; and
University Maternity Hospital Limerick;
The National Rehabilitation Hospital (CMS system);
The National Forensic Mental Health Service (CMS system); and
Children's Health Ireland, which is currently implementing an enterprise level EHR system in advance of the opening of the new children's hospital.
