Men’s Sheds funding

Summary

Deputy Cummins raises concern that Men’s Sheds funding for 2025–26 may not proceed, stressing its mental-health and community role. The Taoiseach says there is no threat to funding and that grant arrangements are being reformed.

The Irish Men's Sheds Association has been contacting its members around the country to let them know that funding for 2025-26 will now not proceed. The association has been told that funding may proceed in 2027. The Taoiseach has been around as a politician for a very long time and I am sure he has visited many men's sheds. They are set up to help with men's mental health, their social, emotional and psychological well-being, friendships and social cohesion. They rely on this very small grant in many cases to remain open, and that is now being challenged. September is suicide prevention month. October is mental health month. Movember is in November. Christmas brings up a lot of things for people. I could go on about the months during which we will seek to make sure that mental health is preserved and minded in everybody, particularly men who account for almost 78% of deaths by suicide. Will the Government reinstate this funding and explain why it needed to be challenged in the first place?

Comment on this

I think a bit of a mistake has been made here. There is no threat to the funding for men's sheds. Government has been very supportive of men's sheds. I met quite a number of participants at the ploughing championships yesterday and they acknowledged that the Government has been particularly supportive of men's sheds. I have opened a good few of them and have been to them, particularly in Carrigaline in my constituency. They do a broad range of work, including in woodwork, construction materials, art, sculpture and so on. However, the Minister is reforming the grant application to reduce the burden because many men's sheds said the process of applying for grants was too burdensome. There will be a simplified grant application and the Minister will revert to people. I think people may have misread the situation. There is no such intention and no threat to the funding.
